In December 2018, DEVI Sansthan began partnering with Sahbhagi Shiksha Kendra in enhancing their adult literacy program in Sitapur district. 15 young, educated women are using the Global Dream toolkits to spread literacy. The target learners are primarily older women from SC and Muslim communities – a group with very low literacy rates.

“I can write my name while my husband still cannot. A few weeks ago we went to the Tehsil, where we both had to sign. When I refused to put a thumb mark on the paper and wrote my name instead, my husband glanced at me in surprise. I will try to learn more and will help my husband to understand the things.”

“I am a ward member, but was completely illiterate. I used to act like a puppet - we don’t have any stand regarding our rights and responsibilities. When we are asked to sign on meeting minutes, it makes no sense to us that what has written on the paper.
Due to my responsibilities towards my ill husband, I initially thought that giving 2-3 hours at the centre would disturb my whole schedule. But when I observed other women are learning a lot and enhancing their basic literacy skill, I couldn’t stop myself. Now I enjoy learning.”
